Canberra to the snowy mountains

Canberra was an odd place, you got the feeling that for many, including myself, it was abit of a stopover place onwards to greater things. In reality it probably deserves more of your time but with so much else nearby it easily gets overlooked. After overnighting in Canberra yha I set about searching for ways to get to Thredbo in the snowy mountains. Thredbo is the Australian equivalent of aviemore, the single big mountain resort and gateway to Mt Kosicuisko, the highest in the Australian continent. It quickly became apparent that in summer you can only drive to Thredbo so the adventure begins. I found a very nice hyundai i30 for hire from Avis for a reasonably sensible price, whisked through the paperwork and voila - a nearly new car all mine for 2 days. No idea what the speed limits are, local driving etiquette or really any Aussie road rules but I'm a quick learner. Managed to book a night at a yha in Sydney for Monday but until then (Saturday morning now) its just me, the car and my tent.

On the way down to Threbo I saw my first wildlife of the trip...all dead by the side of the road. Maybe I'll see a living kangaroo at some point. To my joy though I discovered a USB dock in the car which meant I could crank up the stereo with tunes from the iPod, windows down, wind in my hair. You could almost forget this was a Hyundai. I also decided to name the car Rex, it seems suitably Australian. Rex doesn't roar much though, he's an automatic...and white.  Not unlike a washing machine with a stereo.

Down in Thredbo, things are looking good. It's a very chilled out village and my arrival coincides with a blues music festival so there's outdoor concerts going on in the main village square.

I've decided to spend tonight camping out in the bush then Sunday night at Thredbo yha assuming they have room. Monday will be hectic driving back to Canberra early to catch the train to Sydney, but worry about that on Monday.

Ciao for now folks

P
