Melbourne - goodbye for now

Bumped into another Brit in the Youth hostel yesterday morning, Chris originally from Bournemouth is in Australia for a year working and travelling and has just arrived in Melbourne after 6 hot months in Perth. Chris, if your reading this "hi"! Chris adopted the same approach as I did upon leaving university that adult life in an office is just too boring but wherein just got another job as an outdoor instructor, he moved to the other side of the world for a year. There's an Italian in our room too, Chris and I spent a while trying to remember his name but the best we came to was 'josh' - not that Italian really. It turned out to be Marco or Mario or something and he's also here on a working holiday visa. The final roomie here was a German called Dimitri. We initially thought he was a Russian version of voldemort or a SS agent but no he's just German with an unusual name. Didn't spend too much time with Chris which was a shame, he's in Melbourne for a while so may try to catch up on my return to Melbourne in feb.

Thursday was my final full day in Melbourne, i booked my ticket for Canberra tomorrow then made my way again to Fed Square. There's a couple of free art galleries there which were interesting enough whilst a rain shower past. I'm not sure I could do a full blown art tour though, listening briefly to a tour guide was painful. I don't care about the hidden meaning of an upside down tree in a watercolour!

Back to the sunshine now and just in time for some street performers in fed square. This is more my sort of art and provided fantastic entertainment to a growing crowd. The highlight being a brave fellow riding an 8ft high unicycle whilst juggling machetes whilst balancing a flaming sword on his head. Unique and wonderful, somewhat fitting for Melbourne as a whole you feel.

Back to the hostel briefly to chill out abit. The roof terrace is fantastic, views all over Melbourne and in the sunshine a great place to relax. Fed square had some live and free entertainment on this evening, a couple of your local bands. The first looked like they had potential but were let down abit by sound problems; a sort of light rock/blues sound. The second were a chip off the offspring/Blink 182 block and actually very good, if I remember their name I'll chase up their music.

Friday morning and rather fittingly it drizzled for the walk to Souther Cross station. Odd weather in this here town but at least the 27 Celsius forecast for Canberra today looks good.

Till then folks
P
